Opossum mothers would leave their young ones in the nest in search of food. On their way, they might get killed or caught by another animal. Therefore, leaving the young opossums on their own without any source of nutrition for them. In such cases, it’s highly likely that the baby opossums would starve to death as they aren’t capable enough to take care of themselves. Even so, baby opossums don’t open their eyes for the first few weeks after birth.
What to do when you come across baby opossums
Sometimes we can come across such a nest where the baby opossums are left unnourished without their mother. In such a case, it’s important to know how we should react and deal with the situation. Firstly, you shouldn’t just leave them on their own as the chances of them dying are quite high. Therefore, if you are reluctant to take any action yourself, you should inform nearby rescue centers so they may deal with the situation at hand.
How to deal with the situation
If you’re a caring person and don’t want help to be delayed for the little opossums. There are a few things that you can do for them. Firstly, it’s important that you check for any injuries or bruises on the babies. Baby opossums aren’t aggressive so you can easily handle them. However, still, for safety, it’s important that you wear a full-sleeve shirt along with gloves. Now, it’s time that you shift the opossums to a temporary home.
How to provide shelter to baby opossums
After you’ve ensured that the baby opossums aren’t hurt and don’t need any immediate treatment. You can take a small cardboard box and place a cloth in it for comfort. Also, you should punch holes within the box, so there is proper air circulation within it. You can now place the baby opossums in the cardboard house. However, it’s important that you secure the lid as the opossums might get out of the box into your house. For initial few days, you should feed the baby opossums using a baby bottle and try to keep them warm as well.
How to deal with them permanently?
It’s easier raising a bird on your own. However, most people don’t know what opossum’s diet and habitat are. Therefore, instead of trying to raise the animal on your own. You should call for help from your local animal shelter. They can provide you with all the necessary guidelines on how to transfer the opossum to their shelter. They have all the resources and knowledge to keep the animals happy. Once the opossums are grown, they are released back into the wild by the authorities of the animal shelter.
